Biography

FILIBERTO,Juan de Dios [Oscar Juan de Dios FILIBERTI RUBAGLIO] March 8th 1885,November 11th 1964.

Orchestra conductor and composer, he was a skillful piano, guitar, violin and harmonium player,being the latter the one in which he created the most part of his repertory. FILIBERTO was and will be one of the most important figures in " TANGO"creations author of "QUEJAS DE BANDONEON", "CAMINITO","CUANDO LLORA LA MILONGA", "EL PAÑUELITO", "MALEVAJE", "CLAVEL DEL AIRE", and many others that enriched the "Canción Porteña".

Carlos GARDEL recorded more than fifteen of his songs like "YO TE BENDIGO", "CAMINITO" and "MALEVAJE" ( in electric and achustic system). FILIBERTO's life was one of great efforts and sacrifice , he began working and studying as a small child. He tried different jobs, office boy, bricklayer,turner officer at the shipyard "Mianovich" of "LA BOCA".

He also had a syndical moving life, admirer of "ALMAFUERTE" (Bonifacio PALACIOS) and influenced by the Anarquist current, that was the popular movement at that time due to the important migrations that took place at the begining of the century. He had a strong will as it was demonstrated in the defence of the copyright and its law (11.723) of 1933. Later he created the
"Sociedad Argentina de Autores y Compositores de Música"
(SADAIC), registered as a founder member in 1936. He started his music studies at the age of thirty , studying solfaggio, piano and violin with C. PIAGGIO and C. STIANESSI and harmony whith T. RODRIGUEZ CASTRO. Then , he entered the the National Music Conservatory of Buenos Aires being in charge of it ALBERTO WILLIAMS, there he perfected himself in piano and counterpoint under the close supervision of MAESTRO E. FORNARINI and WILLIAM himself.

FILIBERTO`s PERFORMANCE: in 1938 he started his carreer as an orchestra conductor of national and local organisms in charge of the "ORQUESTA POPULAR DE ARTE FOLKLÓRICO". In 1948 he conducted fourteen musicians in the "ORQUESTA DE MUSICA POPULAR" depending of the National Ministery of Education. By 1956 that same orchestra became "ORQUESTA DE MÚSICA ARGENTINA Y DE CÁMARA". In 1964 (post-mortem) changed its name and became "ORQUESTA JUAN DE DIOS FILIBERTO DE MÚSICA ARGENTINA Y DE CÁMARA", finally, in 1973 due to a Presidential Decree it was renamed "ORQUESTA NACIONAL DE MÚSICA ARGENTINA JUAN DE DIOS FILIBERTO", being actually its conductor Osvaldo Piro.

All this began with his unforgetable "ORQUESTA PORTEÑA", unfortunately not many musical copies are left; two (1941/59)in R.C.A. VICTOR and two (1932/36) in ODEON.
